About two years ago, after it was announced that Heath Ledger would be playing The Joker in the next Batman movie, I asked the following question: ”how can anyone possibly fill Jack Nicholson’s shoes as the best villain of all-time?”
I was skeptical about all the early Oscar buzz surrounding Dark Knight, and I know there’s a lot of time left before the nominations come out, but at this point I would be disappointed if Heath Ledger and the film itself didn’t get nominated for Academy Awards.
After seeing the movie this weekend, I can honestly say that Heath’s take on The Joker is right up there with Hannibal Lecter among the best film villain performances of all-time. Of course, I’ll always have a soft spot for Nicholson’s Joker, but he’s about as threatening as Barney next to Ledger’s version in this new movie.
Here are a couple pictures of Stefy and me at dinner right before showtime. I think we’re both ready to go see this thing a second time…

hey everyone!
this is my first post on ibzp.net.
zacky and I have many things we are looking forward to in the coming year, but in reality, all I can think about lately is “The Dark Knight”! we were geeking out last year when we first saw a complete trailer in the theater, even before heath died… and all of the buzz surrounding his performance has gotten me even more excited.
we bought tickets to see the 8:30pm showing in the imax theater on opening night. I cannot wait!

Hey, anyone remember when I had enough free time to post on this blog almost every day? Me neither. Here are a few highlights from the weekend.
Friday: For some dumb reason I felt compelled to buy a Little Caesar’s Hot ‘n Ready pizza for dinner. This is a mistake I will not repeat again any time soon. Other than the bad pizza, there wasn’t much to report on from this night… just some down time in front of the TV.
Saturday: I slept in past 9 a.m. for the first time in I don’t know how long. Most of the morning was spent lying around the house, before finally getting up and around for a town hall with the boss in Charlotte. We had a pretty decent turnout at the event, and even though our opponent’s campaign manager was there (which was a little weird), I thought it went well.
Stef arrived at my place later that afternoon after spending the day out at the lake with the Southers family. By the time she got there we pretty much had to turn around and leave for Brian’s barbecue. We had a few raindrops while we were there and the mosquitos went to town on my legs, but other than that we had a really fun time. Brian always has a good crowd at his events.
Sunday: We did a little shopping at Target before grabbing lunch at Max & Erma’s on our way to see Wall•E yesterday afternoon. For a story about a robot living on a deserted planet with very little dialogue, this was honestly one of the best love stories I’ve ever seen in a movie. I keep waiting for Pixar to come out with a dud, but so far they’re still batting 1.000.
Last night we decided to experiment in the kitchen by making homemade guacamole and chicken tacos, and both turned out reasonably well. Stef and I have basically settled into a routine where she’s the Executive Chef and I’m her Sous Chef. No matter what’s on the menu, it’s always fun to make a meal together like this.
Anyway, that’s it for now. I have no clue how much time I’ll get off for the 4th this Friday, but tomorrow and Wednesday could be pretty hectic at work, so it might not be another week until I’m able to check in again.
Whoa, this is heavy!
LOS ANGELES — When visitors wander through the back lot of Universal Studios on their tour buses today, they’ll miss some memorable sets of movies and TV shows, destroyed in a raging fire Sunday.Much of Courthouse Square, where 1985’sBack to the Future was filmed, was destroyed. The movie’s iconic clock tower was severely damaged, and officials said it was too early to say whether it could be salvaged.
Fortunately, there is a solution:
Dr. Emmett Brown: [reads the "Save the Clock Tower" flyer and reacts with hope] This is it! This is the answer. It says here… that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04pm, next Saturday night! If… If we could somehow… *harness* this lightning… *channel* it… into the flux capacitor… it just might work. Next Saturday night, we’re sending you back to the future!

So as Popwatch pointed out today, the new (full) trailers for Indiana Jones and Batman were released over the weekend.
If you asked me a week ago which of these movies I was looking forward to seeing more, I would’ve picked Dark Knight over Crystal Skull. After watching the new trailers, I think that opinion might’ve been reversed:

I just wanted to share some thoughts on U2 3D while it’s still fresh in my mind. First off, this is without a doubt the most visually stunning concert film I’ve ever seen. It took a little while for my eyes to adjust to the 3D glasses, but once they did I basically felt like I had the best seat in the house for a great U2 concert.
The picture above obviously looks flat in 2D, but during the movie these overhead shots of Larry’s drum set were simply amazing. The enhanced depth perception in an IMAX movie is incredible.
One thing I appreciated about the cinematography for this movie was that the shots were consistently fluid and easy on the eyes. The Vertigo DVD from Chicago is really frustrating to watch because the editor never holds a single shot for longer than three seconds, to the point where it’s physically painful to watch all the jerky cuts.
In terms of the setlist, this is basically a greatest hits performance. The only real back catalog selection was “Miss Sarajevo,” which was a pleasant surprise. Bono even did a nice job of singing the opera portion of the song that Pavarotti originally sang on the Passengers album.
Noticeably absent were much of U2’s 90s era songs (except for “The Fly” and “One”). I would’ve liked to have heard a couple more Achtung Baby tracks, and maybe “Stay (Faraway So Close!),” but I suppose it would’ve been hard to cram all of that into an 85 minute movie.
If you’re a U2 freak like me, this one is definitely worth seeing in an IMAX theater. It’s cliché, but you really do feel like you’re in the movie. On the whole I’d have to give U2 3D an A-.
Now, on a much less serious note, I give you the trailer for the new Batman movie, starring Adam West:
