Well, the weekend in Ohio was a lot of fun. I made it to town at around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and got to spend a couple hours catching up with my mom on everything before Dan got home a little after 5 p.m. Since I had missed my mom’s birthday on Wednesday, we had her open her presents before we left for dinner. The only gift she actually asked me for was a nice 12" nonstick frying pan with a cover, so I got her the best damn one I could find at Target last weekend. I also kind of stole an idea we had for Teri’s birthday earlier in the month, and printed up four really nice family photos and had them framed for the house. I think both gifts were a hit.
We were all pretty hungry by the time mom was done with her presents, so we went out for dinner at this local Mexican joint on our way to go see Smart People at the movie theater near the OSU campus. The movie was something of a downer, but it was still fun to go out and see a show with my folks.
Yesterday morning was pretty uneventful: Dan had to work; I slept in until about 9:30; got started on the six loads of laundry I brought to wash; and re-loaded some pictures on my mom’s computer after they got deleted the last time it hit the skids. With a little help from my sous-chef I also prepared chili for dinner, which we threw in the crock pot so it could cook during the day.
Our afternoon was pretty uneventful — just lunch, more laundry, and some time in front of the TV. We went to mass at 5 p.m., then came back for dinner (my chili was delish) before driving downtown to see a play. "Dead City" was written by a New York playwright and is supposedly based on Ulysses . While the production got really good reviews in the local paper I think the material was a little highbrow for the three of us, because none of us really "got it." The scene where the main character spit out a wad of gum and swapped it with this college student she was having an affair with was one of the weirdest moments I’ve ever seen in a play (and I’ve seen some weird ones). As bizarre as the show was though, I still think we were glad to get out of the house and enjoy another night on the town.
Before I left this afternoon we all sat down for a game of Scrabble, which I was fully expecting to lose. Fortunately, I drew all the good letters (Q, Z, J, X) and actually found good spots to play them, so I mopped the floor with my mom and Dan, which is quite a rarity.
After our game we chowed down on some steaks off the grill for a late lunch, then I pretty much had to hit the road for Michigan. On my way home this afternoon I drove through three different weather patterns — there was rain, snow and sunshine — but I made it back home without any incidents.
While we struck out on two of the big entertainment choices this weekend, I still had a lot of fun visiting my mom and Dan. It’s always worth the drive.
