Now, for the re-cap…
There were obviously some ups and downs this year. I know losing an Uncle and losing a dog obviously aren’t the same thing, but saying goodbye to Marty and Sparty were definitely two of the toughest events my family has had to deal with in the past several years. While I usually only saw Marty once or twice a year, I can honestly say that I was closer with him (and LouAnn) than some of my blood relatives. Hey, I can’t think of any other Aunts or Uncles who ever paid me to fetch beers for them. I know Morgan and Kyra are still young, but I’m just happy they had a few years to get to know their Uncle Marty. He was a great guy, and he will be missed.
Losing Sparty back in October — especially so suddenly — hit me a lot harder than I ever would’ve imagined. While I never lived in the same house with that dog, she was the first real pet I ever had a connection with, and I already find myself missing her greetings at the door whenever I go over to my dad’s to visit. I’ll probably have other pets in my lifetime, but I doubt any of them will ever live up to the “Barry Sanders of dog.”
On the positive side of things, I landed a great new job this year, saw some amazing concerts, and attended one of my best friend’s wedding. Oh, and I got engaged! I know I’ve already been done with school for close to two years, and living on my own for even longer than that, but this felt like the year that I really grew up, for lack of a better term.
Getting engaged was pretty huge, and I certainly couldn’t imagine a better person to spend the rest of my life with. Stef is heading off to grad school in Chicago in less than a week, which means we’ll be starting the whole long distance thing pretty soon. I’m not saying the next two years will be easy, but I figure if we can make it through this (and I know we will), Stefy and I will be ready to take on just about anything life can throw at us.
Okay, so this post has officially meandered in to one long sap-tastic rant, which means it’s time for me to wrap things up. I hope everyone had a happy and safe New Year’s Eve. Best wishes for a great 2008!
