I don’t know if this makes it sting worse or not, but I just wanted to point out that the Appalachian State Mountaineers won their third straight Division I-AA Championship:

Appalachian State became the first three-peat national champions in Division I-AA, beating Delaware 49-21 in the Football Championship Subdivision title game.

Armanti Edwards had three touchdown passes for the Mountaineers, who jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never trailed in beating the Fightin’ Blue Hens. Edwards passed for 198 yards and ran 18 times for another 89 after accounting for 495 total yards in Appalachian State’s semifinal win over Richmond.

The Blue Hens finally scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to Mark Duncan late in the half. But the Mountaineers restored their 21-point lead when Edwards hit Dexter Jackson for a 60-yard touchdown and a 28-7 lead.

The Mountaineers were 13-2 in a season that began with a 34-32 win at then-No. 5 Michigan.
