cold war II next year?

Unfortunately I didn’t get to attend the original Cold War game at Spartan Stadium (although, I did tailgate), but this sounds like a pretty sweet premise for a follow-up:

Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson and Michigan State coach Rick Comley confirmed a game was in the works for next December at Ford Field.

And, Comley said, it could be part of a doubleheader with a Maple Leafs-Red Wings game.

“We’ve had preliminary, and I have to emphasize extremely preliminary, discussions regarding the possibility of holding a game at Ford Field in the future,” said Jimmy Devellano, senior vice president and alternate governor for the Red Wings. “It’s been very, very light discussions.”

The Frozen Four is coming to Ford Field in 2010, and Ford Field officials want a trial run.

For a sport that has lost a lot of ground since the big strike a few seasons ago, this sounds like a great way to get people excited about hockey again. Of course, I was at the Basketbowl game four years ago, and while it was an exciting event, such a large venue for a game like basketball (or hockey, for that matter) wasn’t exactly an ideal viewing experience.

That said, it would be great to see a Wings game and an MSU-UM matchup with a single ticket. Hopefully they can pull it off.
