My old man’s been in Portland with my Aunt Elaine and Bob since about Thursday last week for the Davis Cup tournament against Russia. Looks like he picked a good year to go:
Andy Roddick said helping the U.S. win its first Davis Cup title in 12 years was as satisfying as his lone Grand Slam victory.
Roddick, James Blake and twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan clinched tennis’s premier team tournament for the U.S. two days ago and yesterday completed a 4-1 win over Russia at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon.
It’s the first Davis Cup crown for the U.S. since 1995, when a Pete Sampras-led team won in Moscow. The 12-year gap is the longest stretch between titles for the U.S., which has won a record 32 in the international competition since 1900.
“Winning the U.S. Open, trying to compete for slams, you’re playing for a lot of selfish reasons,” Roddick, who won the 2003 U.S. Open in New York, said at a news conference. “To come in here and share this with these guys and to have developed the friendships and everything that goes along with it, it’s just amazing. It’s definitely on par with anything that I’ve accomplished in tennis.”
The last time the U.S. won the Davis Cup on home soil was in 1992 in Fort Worth, Texas, a final Roddick attended as a fan when he was 10 years old.
Here are dad’s photo albums from the trip:

I’m at the airport, heading home on Monday morning. We had a great time…Elaine and Bob are staying out here for a few more days. I also have a number of cool video clips from the trip. Met lots of fun people, and Portland is a very cool town!
