introducing my best man, mr. daniel schafer

So I was in the car with my mom and Dan two weekends ago, when Dan starts asking what his “role” will be at the wedding. Of course, I knew a year or two ago that I would ask Dan to be my best man when the time came, but I wanted to wait until Stef was in town before bringing it up, so my mom and I decided to have some fun at Dan’s expense.

We started rattling off all these ridiculous assignments he could have: babysitting all the kids who won’t be invited to the wedding (except for the Southers brothers and the Pohl girls, of course), serving cake to the guests, following Stef around all day to carry her trane, etc.

Mom and I thought this was a hoot, but I could tell Dan was genuinely concerned about what his responsibilities would be (if he had any). It was actually really sweet.

The more I think about it, the more I think this little moment we had in the car basically summarizes my relationship with Dan. I tease the guy constantly and give him a hard time about practically everything, and he reacts with class and dignity, and puts up with my bullshit.

I mean, come on… what more could a groom ask for in a best man?

zack-toast.jpgSeriously though, Dan is one of the most caring and genuinely decent people I’ve ever known, and I couldn’t ask for a better person to be the best man in my wedding. We’ve had our tiffs over the years (99% initiated by me), but we always manage to work things out. Just like Sherry, Dan is my family, and I’m proud to have both of them as step-parents. It was an honor to stand up as Dan’s best man at my mom’s wedding, and I’m glad I’ll get a chance to extend the same gesture to him at my own.

Of course, this doesn’t mean I’ll stop harassing the guy between now and then, but as always, I fully expect Dan to take it in stride.
