on lloyd carr’s retirement

lloyd-carr.jpgThis might surprise some people, but I actually have a lot of respect for Lloyd Carr. So many of the Michigan “faithful” have been ready to show him the door for the past seven years — hmm, wonder if it has anything to do with his abysmal record against Tressel’s OSU program? — but if he had amassed this resume at Michigan State, we’d have a sculptor working on his statue as I write this. Take a look:

*Big Ten Championships in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2004

*A share of the 1997 National Championship

*A win-loss record of 121-40

*10-3 against in-state rival MSU

Does this mean Michigan State football fans’ standards are too low? Are Wolverine fans’ standards too high? Probably a bit of both.

I think most people would agree that Carr was never the best sideline coach, but he always had a top-notch staff that kept the team fully stocked with talented players year-in and year-out. Speaking as a Spartan fan who’s lived through five coaches in my lifetime (four since 1999), I would kill to see my team with a situation like this.

And yet, it never felt like Michigan fans were ever truly satisfied with Lloyd Carr. Even during the good years.

Ultimately, as the Ann Arbor News said, it boils down to the fact that:

Fans grew frustrated with Carr’s inability to beat the Buckeyes or win a bowl game.

Not having beaten Michigan or won a bowl game since 2001, I can understand the frustration.

But having seen how tricky it can be to replace a talented coach (Nick Saban), I will say this… be careful what you wish for. Michigan might pull a rabbit out of its hat and score someone like Les Miles as their next head coach (although it sounds like a stretch at this point).

Or they could land the next Charlie Weis.

Time will tell, but considering how much UM’s once-dominant basketball program has crumbled over the past fifteen years, Wolverine fans had better pray that they make the right choice when it comes to selecting this next football coach.

And that’s all I have to say about that.
