happy (belated) birthday, stefy girl!

Well, it was a pretty crazy weekend. Stefy turned 22 on Saturday, and we had a full slate of birthday-related events.

Starting on Friday evening, we went out with the whole family for a really nice dinner at The Lark in West Bloomfield. This was just one of those amazing meals you never want to end: fantastic service, fabulous food, good company… we had a great time.

Saturday morning we went out for breakfast with Tim and Teri at the Pancake Houe and I was able to enjoy their world-famous pumpkin pancakes. My gut was ready to explode by the time we were done there, but it was well worth it.

The Southers came over to spend some time out at the pool later in the afternoon, and I watched the first half of MSU’s heartbreaker against Wisconsin. Tim, Teri, Stefy and I went out for a quick bite at Pita CafĂ© in Birmingham shortly after the Southers took off. We thoguht we needed to hurry a bit so we could make it out to the Palace in time for the Maroon 5 concert, but it turned out there were two opening acts, so we wound up killing some time at the bar once we arrived.

The Hives were the second opener (we missed the first), and man, do they suck. I hate to sound like an old fogie, but it was just really loud and obnoxious. The singer thinks he’s Mick Jagger, but the guy can’t carry a tune… it was pretty awful.

Maroon 5 put on a really good show, although the funnist moment of the night came about a third of the way into the set when they transitioned into part of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” which happens to be Stef’s least favorite song ever made. I thought it was bust-a-gut funny, but she was less than impressed. Other than that though, the concert was a lot of fun, and I think we all had a good time.

Teri whipped up a nice little breakfast for us on Sunday morning, and then Stefy and I took off for Somerset to exchange the scarf I bought for her birthday. Long story short: I picked this scarf out on Friday and when Stef opened it on Saturday, the first thing she noticed was a big tear in the thing. Grrrrrr.

Anyway, that took a little longer than we were expecting, and it was already pushing 2 p.m. by the time we made it back to Stef’s house. We pretty much hit the road right away for Lansing and hung out at my place for an hour or so before leaving again to go pick up Stef’s friend Danielle for the Guster concert.

After a quick bite at the Peanut Barrel we swung by to pick up Danielle’s friends, then made our way over to the Auditorium for the show.

Yes, this was our second Guster concert in less than three months, but hey, we couldn’t pass up the chance to see one of our favorite bands on Stef’s birthday weekend. Last night’s setlist was a lot of fun, and they played a couple songs that weren’t on the menu back in July. Of course, the best part was not having a bunch of drunk idiots hogging up floor space right in front of us like we did when we saw them at the Fillmore, so that helped too.

Near the end of the show the band announced that they weren’t going to do the usual encore routine where they leave and then come back out. As Ryan put it, “More music, less bullshit.” I was down with that, but when the band left the stage everyone kept cheering for one more song anyway. A minute or so later the guys came back out and then the first thing we heard was the tune from “Cheers” on the piano. The drummer, who basically never says a word, came up to the main microphone and rocked out the lyrics to the theme song. So yeah, that was a nice way to cap off the big birthday weekend.

Anyhoo, that’s it for now. Here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
