“I read People magazine and I watch TV… I know things!”
~Stefanie Spiro, September 2005
That’s still one of my all-time favorite Stefy quotes. I don’t even really remember the circumstances, but I think we were driving near Eastwood and bickering about some pop culture reference when she pulled that one out of nowhere.
Anyway, the only reason I bring it up now is because I was watching my Northern Exposure DVDs tonight (thanks, Dad and Sheery), and there’s a scene where Shelly and Holling get in an argument after he leaves her standing at the altar. So Shelly says, “I read magazines and I watch TV… I know how people are supposed to treat each other.”
God, I thought I was gonna fall off the couch laughing.
So yeah, no one is really going to appreciate this besides Stef, but I thought I would share it anyway. Carry on.

hooray!
you know what’s even funnier, is that I was thinking of that quote last night because on the top model episode they aired, there was this one girl who basically made a similar statement… something like, “I read and I know stuff and I hang out with guys…”… a very model-esque version of my quote.
that conversation will obviously be living in infamy
((oh, and thank you for spoiling a plot point))
I loveyou!
That scene from “Northern Exposure” reminds me of another one from the show. I don’t remember the circumstances, but Shelly went to the little church in town, only to find it empty. Then, Holling steps out of the shadows and sings “Ave Maria” to her acapella. He has a beautiful singing voice (he’s done lots of Broadway musicals, which I didn’t know before that). It was such a shock to hear him sing so well! And in the story, it was a touching display of his love for Shelly. One of my enduring memories of the show…along with, of course, the guy who died when a satellite fell on him.
