My two favorite teams — Michigan State and Whoever’s Playing Michigan (Appalachian State, in this case) — both pulled out big wins today!

Sorry Wolverine fans. Looks like that undefeated season just went out the window. Headlines like this make me happy:

UPDATE: From MLive’s Wolverines Blog

That’s got to be one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, if not the biggest. We are consulting the record books right now.

UPDATE #2: From the Free Press Game Blog by Kyle O’Neill:

I’m literally numb and I think I’m having a stroke at the age of 25. What a way for the Big Ten Network to debut.

Without a doubt, it was the greatest upset in college football history, in my opinion.

Lloyd Carr is going to have the toughest week of his coaching life.

I’ll be back later when I’ve collected my thoughts.

UPDATE #3: From the Detroit News:

“It’s probably the biggest loss in Michigan history, biggest win for them,” Michigan running back Mike Hart told the News on the field after the game. “We lost a game to lesser opponent. We’ve got to come out and get better. We have a long season ahead of us. I don’t happened [sic].”

UPDATE #4: Again, from the Wolverines Blog:

This was supposed to be a championship-caliber team in what is possibly Lloyd Carr’s last opener is coach.

With all hopes of a national championship pretty much dashed on the first Saturday of the season, it will be interesting to see if Michigan can salvage anything from the remaining games.

And Bill Martin must be kicking himself for scheduling Appalachian State.
__________

That’s got to be one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, if not the biggest. We are consulting the record books right now.

In 1992, The Citadel upset Arkansas, 10-3. Arkansas’ coach was fired the next day. That is one of the biggest Division I-AA upsets in history. Last year, I-AA Montana State opened its season with a 19-10 win over Colorado.

But none of those compare with what transpired today, with Appalachian State walking out of The Big House with a 34-32 victory over No. 5 Michigan.
__________

Appalachian State is celebrating on the block M at midfield.

UPDATE #5: UM fans wail, gnash teeth:

I have been saying this for the last 2 yrs…Its time for carr to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You dont lose 2 yrs in a row to OSU and you dont lose 2 yrs in a row in a bowl game. Now ap state comes walking into the big house and they beat us, they earned the victory and carr earned my distaste again…

UofM you need to fire CARR!!!!!

Well, I guess that idiot Lloyd Carr forgot that it also takes a defense to win. Lloyd Carr is not capable to coach a team the potential calibur of Michigan, it’s finally time that someone needs to realize that Carr needs to go, get a real and capable coach. If Michigan would have played ND or OSU today, the score would have been 100 to nothing.
It’s going to be a VERY long season.

UPDATE #6: “Shell-shocked fans react to historic football upset

“I’m in no mood to party,” one student said to his friend as they headed up South State Street.

“How the (expletive) does (expletive) Appalachian State dominate us like that?” he said. “I can’t believe it. Other than the first minute or two, they were so much better than us.

“There’s no (expletive) way we should lose that game.”

Seven-year-old Matt Tol of Brighton had tears in his eyes.

“It’s his first game to see in person,” his dad Ethan said. “He was so excited to see them play in person, and he’s just so sad to see them lose like they did.”

A picture is worth a thousand words…
