There wasn’t a whole lot going on yesterday, so after I got home from my dad’s for dinner, I finally got around to re-watching North by Northwest for the first time in about ten years.
Cary Grant was great (of course), but it still couldn’t de-throne some of my other Hitchcock favorites. Anyway, here’s my top five:
- Rear Window: For a movie with basically one set, this is still one of the most suspenseful films I’ve ever seen. When Grace Kelly’s character goes over to the other apartment, you feel just as helpless as Jimmy Stewart.
- Vertigo: One of the few times you feel genuinely creeped out by Jimmy Stewart in a movie. I still like to quote the line from It’s a Wonderful Life whenever I see that last scene in Vertigo. Because I’m cool like that.
- Psycho: I still remember the first time I saw this. When I finally figured out what was going on, I was just kinda like… eeeewwww.
- The Birds: For such a ridiculous plot idea, this is still one of the freakiest movies I’ve ever seen. That last sequence in the house makes you feel claustrophobic, and the final shot of all the birds as they drive away is really unsettling.
- North by Northwest: The scene with the crop duster is great. Cary Grant gets off the bus in the middle of nowhere. Nothing could possibly go wrong, right?
