Just for the heck of it, I thought I'd post another teaser clip about the film. Here, Mark Fuller is telling folks how they can get started and start BELIEVING. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: john mayer
09.20.06 // 07:59 AM
Well, I've been trying to download the new John Mayer album from iTunes for about a week now, but for some ridiculous reason Apple has told me they can't process any orders with my credit card until October 7th or 8th (some glitch in their billing system). They gave me five free songs to make up for the problem so I guess that's better than nothing, but I still don't have the new CD and probably won't be able to download it for a few more weeks.
Anyway, here are a couple live clips of songs from John's first album. The first video is from Carson Daly's show on NBC, and is John playing "Neon." The second clip was actually recorded by a fan at a Tower Records way back in 2001, and features John playing "Great Indoors." Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: new radicals
09.19.06 // 07:14 AM
Well, after my little New Radicals flashback yesterday, it's kinda funny that I would actually find a live track of the group on YouTube. I mean, part of the reason Gregg Alexander disbanded the group after releasing just two singles from "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" was because he hated touring and didn't want to promote the album anymore. Anyway, I'm just glad I was able to unearth this clip of New Radicals doing "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" on Live@MuchMusic. This song is one of my favs, so enjoy!

i've been amwayed!
09.11.06 // 07:30 AM
I've seen some funny stuff about DeVos and AMWAY during this campaign, but this is probably the best one yet. Kudos to the person who came up with this one:
Tonight is the I Love the 90s show at Pine Knob, where we're seeing Hootie & The Blowfish and Better Than Ezra. Coincidentally the guys from the Gin Blossoms will be also be making an appearance this evening... behind the counter at the concession stand.
Anyway, to celebrate this 90s flashback, I'm sharing a couple Better Than Ezra videos this morning: "Good" and "Extraordinary". Wah-ow... enjoy!

video killed the blogger: hootie & the blowfish
09.06.06 // 08:00 AM
It's been a while since I've done one of these -- mostly because I was simply running out of material -- but here we go again. Today's featured band is Hootie & The Blowfish, and the video is from their giganto-huge smash, "Only Wanna be With You."
Stefy and I are going to see his Hootisciousness with Better Than Ezra on Friday, so it'll be one big 90s music fest. Hopefully I'll unearth a clip of theirs to post by Friday morning. Until then, have fun mumbling along with Darius.

video killed the blogger: coldplay + fatboy slim
08.31.06 // 07:16 AM
I haven't done one of these in a while, but after seeing Coldplay's newest video for their song "The Hardest Part," I just had to post this thing. It's really, really weird... and I love it. God only knows where they found these people, but this is definitely one of the most bizarrely entertaining videos since Fatboy Slim's video with Christopher Walken for "Weapon of Choice." Which, coincidentally, I'm also posting today. Enjoy!
So... which one takes home the prize for a higher weirdness factor?

the coolest thing microsoft has ever done
08.18.06 // 05:21 PM
For anyone who watches the American version of "The Office" on NBC, it's time to face facts... it'll never be as good as the original UK version.
When you consider that they only made 12 episodes of this show, plus a two-part Christmas special, these 17 minute Microsoft training videos are a Godsend for fans like me.
Ricky Gervais (a.ka. David Brent) and Stephen Merchant are in rare form here. This has to be the coolest thing that Microsoft has ever done. Enjoy!
Batman is still my favorite comicbook hero. I mean, the dude's a regular guy, and he's still a badass.
Well, I always kind of forget about how bad the old Batman TV show was. Aside from being ridiculous, this clip is more than a little creepy. Please enjoy the "Siamese Human Knot":

It's primary day, so I figured it was appropriate to post a patriotic song like "America The Beautiful." I couldn't track down a good clip of the famous Ray Charles rendition, but here's the short Keb' Mo' version from the final episode of The West Wing. Enjoy! Oh, and VOTE TODAY!

With all the Mel Gibson Jew hating drama taking place this week, I have dispatched my mom -- a lifelong Mel fan -- to write a blog post addressing the controversy. Hopefully she'll have something for me to share with everyone by this time tomorrow.
In the meantime, take a moment to watch this short Public Service Announcement featuring Mr. Gibson.
Oh, Mel. Those were the days.

07.27.06 // 08:34 AM
Does anyone remember The Verve? No, not the Verve Pipe. The UK band The Verve. Yeah, me neither. But I bet you'll remember their one and only hit song, "Bittersweet Symphony." Ah, so 90s. So great. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: badly drawn boy
07.26.06 // 08:43 AM
About a Boy is one of those movies that I was kind of ho-hum about when I saw it in the theater. Then I watched it a few more times, and I loved it more and more each time I saw it. One of the best things about it is that the soundtrack is so great. Badly Drawn Boy did the score for the film, and all the songs just do a wonderful job of setting the perfect mood for each scene. So, you can imagine how geeked I was last summer when I saw a combo pack of the DVD and the accompanying soundtrack for something ridiculously cheap like £10 (about $18) at Virgin. Anyway, as my affection for the film has grown over the last couple years, so has my love of the soundtrack.
Unfortunately the best video I could find of Badly Drawn Boy is pretty low quality, but the audio is pretty decent in this live performance of "Silent Sigh" from the About a Boy soundtrack. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: john lennon
07.25.06 // 08:24 AM
Well, I know I've posted a bunch of Beatles clips before, but today is a John Lennon morning for some reason. I turned on the "Lennon" box set on my iPod, and I'm hoping to plow through all 75 songs by the end of the day.
The first clip this morning is a live performance of "Imagine" -- definitely worth checking out. Video number two is a live performance of "Come Together", and the third clip is John's version of "Stand By Me". The word genius gets thrown around a lot in the music world, but few really deserve that title more than John Lennon. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: the guess who
07.24.06 // 07:09 AM
I don't know what made me think of this song this morning, but for whatever reason I did. This is one of those really cheesy pre-MTV music videos that remind you how terrible these things used to be (and, in a way, still are), but "American Woman" is still a great rock song, no matter how old-school and lame its music video might be. Plus, it always makes me think of that scene in American Beauty when Kevin Spacey is driving in his car and smoking a joint. Anyway, enjoy:

video killed the blogger: no doubt
07.20.06 // 07:10 AM
I've never been big on female singers. It's not that I ever had anything against them per se, but there were just always more bands with male vocalists that I liked a lot more. No Doubt is definitely an exception to that rule. Honestly, on my list of bands that I've never seen perform live, they're at or near the top of the list for which ones I want to see first. It's hard to believe that they've been around for well over ten years now. That's real staying power in the music industry, by today's standards.
Anyway, the first clip this morning is a live performance of "Just a Girl", which is the first song of theirs that made me take notice of them. The second video is still probably their biggest hit, "Don't Speak". Finally, the band is doing the Beatles' "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da" live to close out one of their concerts in the last clip. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: john mellencamp
07.19.06 // 07:57 AM
In honor of Dan Quayle taking offense to John Mellencamp dedicating his song "Walk Tall" to everyone hurt by policies of the Bush administration, today's first video is... "Walk Tall". Clip number two is the video for "Pink Houses", and the third video is for "Small Town", two of my favorite Mellencamp tunes. Enjoy!

07.18.06 // 07:20 AM
WAAOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRGHHOOOOOWWW!
Yep, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, is the featured artist this morning. The first clip is from one of those old teen dance shows with James lip syncing "I Feel Good". Video number two is a (real) liver performance of "Sex Machine". And finally, clip number three is from James Brown's Celebrity Hot Tub Party.
Too hot in the hot tub!

two new movie trailers
07.17.06 // 10:35 PM
There were two new trailers that I hadn't seen before when we went to see An Inconvenient Truth on Saturday. Both of them look very intriguing. Have a look:
There's just not a lot you can say about Eric Clapton. He's the greatest guitar player alive. End of story. Here's EC doing "Layla" live (the old-school, rock version). The second clip is a live version of "Wonderful Tonight", his best ballad. Enjoy!
|
video killed the blogger: tom petty
07.13.06 // 08:02 AM
If you can get past the Dylan-esque voice and horsey face, then you can appreciate Tom Petty. He's one of those artists that I have to take in small doses, but he's made some truly amazing music over the years. Clip number one this morning is a live performance of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers doing "American Girl", one of my favorites. The second video is a grainy looking/sounding rendition of "Free Fallin'" from a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina just over a month ago. Finally, the last clip is the music video for "I Won't Back Down." Interestingly, Ringo Starr and George Harrison make appearances in the video with Mr. Petty. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: bonnie raitt
07.12.06 // 07:28 AM
Last night was the Keb' Mo'/Bonnie Raitt concert at Common Ground, which I'm sorry to say I missed. This morning I had an email from my dad saying that the thought crossed his mind that it was too bad that it rained during the concert last night, since that's exactly what happened when we went to the Michigan Festival to see Bonnie 15 years ago. So I checked the LSJ website to see if last night's show got cut short because of the weather [from LSJ]:
It was a dark and stormy night ... and the rain at Adado Riverfront Park on Tuesday night could have been the Common Ground headline, but thanks to more than a few thousand hardy mid-Michigan rock fans, it somehow wasn’t. As Bonnie Raitt herself said from the stage: “You’re really stalwarts out there ... these Michigan people are tough!”
Either that, or they remember Raitt’s last local appearance, at the now-defunct Michigan Fest in 1991, which was rained out four songs into her set. We had to wait 15 years to get her back; we can’t just let her get away again.
So, I'm glad to read that the show didn't get totally rained out like ours did. I can still remember how disappointed my dad was when Bonnie told us that they had to stop the show at that show 15 years ago (God, I can't believe it's been that long!). He was yelling things at the stage like "We'll help you move inside Breslin, Bonnie! They've got power in there!" Heh... oh, dad. Anyway, here's a couple Bonnie clips this morning. In the first one she's performing the Stevie Ray Vaughn classic "Pride and Joy". The second clip is Bonnie with blues legend John Lee Hooker performing "I'm in the Mood". Enjoy!
|
video killed the blogger: keb' mo'
07.11.06 // 10:24 AM
I. Love. Keb'. Mo'. He's probably the best modern blues musician in America, and tonight he's playing with Bonne Raitt at the Common Ground Music Festival in Lansing (here's an article by Mike Hughes in today's HUB). Sadly, I don't have tickets to the event, but I'm sure it'll be a great show. Anyway, the first clip is Keb' doing this really sweet love song, "Closter" (unfortunately, there's some boring white dude that keeps interrupting the clip). The second video is Keb' and Corey Harris doing the immortal Robert Johnson's "Sweet Home Chicago". Enjoy!

07.10.06 // 07:16 AM
A week after seeing Huey Lewis and the News at Pine Knob, it just struck me that I forgot to feature them in a VKB post. They're just one of those bands that I always forget about, but they really do have a ton of songs that I absolutely love. Anyway, here are a couple Huey videos to get things rolling this week: "The Power of Love" and "The Heart of Rock and Roll". Enjoy!

it's gonna be that kind of morning
07.08.06 // 12:03 PM
Well, it's Saturday morning (-ish), and I thought it was time for a trip down memory lane. Clip number one is the wonderful opening theme song from Pee Wee's Playhouse. In the second clip, we see Pee Wee make an appearance on David Letterman's show. It ends with an amazing Pee Wee breakdancing routine. The final clip is a hard-hitting PSA of Pee Wee telling kids not to do crack cocaine. Enjoy!

I got all excited this morning when a light bulb went off in my head that I had never posted clips of Elvis before, but then when I looked back through my archives, I see that I did. Ah well. Anyway, here's a couple good clips of "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Love Me Tender" this morning. Enjoy!

video killed the blogger: beck
07.06.06 // 07:24 AM
If you ever asked me to list off my favorite artists, Beck would probably slip my mind, but he's one of the musicians who finds his way onto my iPod quite a bit (especially during the summer). The first clip is "Girl", which is probably my favorite song from his most recent album, Guero. Video number two is "Peaches and Cream" from Midnite Vultures, and is also probably my favorite song from that particular record. Enjoy!
|
video killed the blogger: the temptations
07.05.06 // 08:12 AM
Today I'm featuring one of the greatest vocal groups of all-time, The Temptations. Clip number one is sort of like an early music video of the Temps doing "My Girl." Those guys still have some of the best dance moves I've ever seen. The second video is the Temps doing "The Way You Do The Things You Do" with Diana Ross. Enjoy!

He may be a prick in everyday life, but Van Morrison is still one of the coolest cats in the music industry, and one of my favorite musicians. 06.27.06 // 07:41 AM
This morning I'm featuring another world-class soul singer who left planet earth far too early, Marvin Gaye. The first track is a live performance of the sexiest song ever recorded, "Let's Get It On", with a short intro from "Come Get To This". Video clip number two is a superb live version of the greatest protest song ever written, "What's Going On". Enjoy!
(P.S. I want Marvin's Green suit)

It's Monday morning, and Mondays can be a little slow getting off the ground. I thought a fun musical act was in order to get the day rolling, so here are a couple Barenaked Ladies clips to put you in the right mood. Both come from a live show at the Hard Rock in Florida circa 2000: "The Old Apartment" and "Baby Seat". Enjoy!

06.23.06 // 07:28 AM
Elton John gets the nod this morning. The first clip is a newer live version of one of his oldest songs (and my personal favorite), "Your Song". Clip number two comes from one of the John Lennon memorial concerts in Central Park, and is Elton performing "Imagine". Enjoy!

Just as this ongoing music series was running out of steam, my dad came along to recharge my batteries and give me a ton of suggestions for artists to feature. So, today it's none other than Stevie Wonder, with performances of "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing" and "Living for the City". Enjoy!

06.20.06 // 08:30 AM
I was sitting here this morning wracking my brain trying to come up with a good idea for what clips to post, and then it hit me. For however long I've been doing these little morning music video clips now, I've never posted anything from the Rolling Stones! This is clearly a shame on my part that needs to be corrected immediately. So, this morning I give you two live cuts from the Stones: "Brown Sugar" from Top of the Pops, and "Satisfaction" circa 1981. Enjoy!

It's always fun to drive with the Police... on your stereo. Just about anything off the Synchronicity album is great driving music, except for the song "Mother", but I guess they can't all be gems. Of course, live cuts of their songs are few and far between on YouTube, but I managed to dig up a couple great ones. The first clip is The Police circa 1979 doing "Roxanne" at the Beat Club. Fast forward 24 years for the second clip of the band performing "Every Breath You Take" at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Enjoy!

Well, since I'm seeing Ringo tonight I wanted to post a Ringo song, but since Ringo songs from the Beatles are few and far between, I just picked a live version of "I Saw Her Standing There", one of my favorite early-era Beatles tunes.
The second pick of the day is Bruce and the Seeger band doing "John Henry" live for the BBC. Enjoy!

06.14.06 // 09:01 AM
Well, my CD of the Beach Boys' immortal "Pet Sounds" finally arrived yesterday. I've never sat down and listened to the whole thing straight through, and of course, it exceeded my already high expectations.
Today's clip is a live performance of Brian Wilson singing "God Only Knows", circa 1988. The video is a bit grainy, and you have to sit through about a minute and a half of Paul Reiser and some chick bantering, but it's definitely worth the effort. Not only is the one of the greatest pop songs ever recorded, it's also one of about a dozen tunes that Stefy and me say is "our song". Anyway, it's fantastic. Enjoy:

which looks worse?
06.13.06 // 03:51 PM
There seems to be no end to the steady succession of bad movie trailers that have been popping up for quite some time now. These two prime suspects look terrible for very different reasons.
The first is the Oliver Stove sellout/chest-beating-patriotism/piece of schlock movie about 9/11, aptly titled World Trade Center. Frankly, I'm shocked that Oliver Politically-Liberal-Conspiracy-Theory-Wacko Stone would make a movie that looks like something we'd see at the next Republican convention, but then again, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, especially when it comes to exploiting the tragedy of 9/11. This is also the second time in a row Nick Cage has made an appearance in a "Which is Worse?" post on iBZP, and I'm sure it won't be the last.
Our second entry is the trailer for Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties. I won't waste a lot of time on this one. It's clearly a mindless effort meant to cash in on the easy family market, but it does make me worry about Bill Murry's financial status, since he's behind the mic again to handle the voiceover duties for Garfield a second time. Then again, if he has to do a couple pieces of crap like this so he can afford to make more movies like Lost in Translation and Broken Flowers, it can't be a complete waste of celluloid.
Anyway, these both look like crap, but I want to ask you... which looks worse?

I've resisted the temptation to post nothing but U2 clips in these posts (for the most part), but every once in a while I have to indulge myself. Right now I'm in an old-school, 80s era U2 mood, and found some goodies on YouTube this morning. This clip is a long live version of the boys doing "Two Hearts Beat As One" circa 1983, and features Mullet Bono, and the Edge back when he still had hair. Enjoy!

Well, I started off the morning with a little David Bowie on my way into work. I had a hard time digging up a really good clip on YouTube, but managed to unearth this video of Bowie circa 1970 in a hideous outfit singing "Space Oddity". While the outfit is painful to look at, it's still a great live rendition of one of his best songs. Enjoy!

which trailer looks worse?
06.05.06 // 10:07 PM
I've noticed a disturbing trend lately... bad movie trailers. It seems like every time I go to the theater nowadays, all I see is previews for crappy movies. Is it just me?
Ghost Rider is another Marvel Comic that is getting the Hollywood treatment. The basic premise looks bad enough by itself, but as soon as Nicholas Cage gets added to the mix, I think the preview reaches a new level of bad.
Second is the trailer for the new Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock schlock-fest, The Lake House. I won't waste my breath describing this unbelievably stupid storyline, but I think it involves time travel... and it's a love story.
So, the question is... which trailer looks worse?

Who is the musical clip this morning?
The Who.
Who?
The Who.
Oh.
For those who don't remember the concert for New York City shortly after 9/11, the Who gave the best performance of the night, even though they were in the company of greats like Elton John, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, John Mellencamp, Mick Jagger, Keither Richards, and Paul McCartney. This is their balls-to-the-wall rendition of Baba O'Riley from the concert, which also happens to be my favorite Who song. Enjoy.

I doubt I'll have time to post much this afternoon, so here's today's video/music post a bit early.
Jimi Hendrix was on the iPod this morning, so he gets the nod today. As always, YouTube serves up a couple great live cuts of "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Foxy Lady", which are two of my favorite Hendrix songs. Enjoy!

We had a staff meeting today, so I didn't have as much time as usual to listen to music. Still, for whatever reason, it just felt like a Rolling Stones kinda afternoon.
Today's video is a live performance of my favorite Stones song, Beast of Burden, circa 1981. I love seeing Keith hammer away with a cigarette hanging off his lip. This guy never changes. They'll probably bury him with a cig in his mouth.
Anyway, it's a great performance. Enjoy!

I've been listening to Bruce's new "We Shall Overcome – The Seeger Sessions" a lot lately. It's fantastic.
I think the album sounds like the Boss and his "wall of folk" musicians had a ball making this record. It's wild and raucous in places, and the songs lack a certain polish, but I think that's just perfect for an album like this. I never thought folk music could be this much fun to listen to.
Anyway, today's video comes from an appearance recorded at Asbury Park that appeared on Good Morning America recently. Hurry up and have a look before the Internet hounds at ABC make YouTube take it down:

I've been listening to the new Paul Simon CD Surprise a lot over the last couple days, and it's fantastic. So, I'm in the mood for some Rhymin' Simon right now. As usual, YouTube fills the need with this short gem of Paul and George Harrison performing "Here Comes The Sun" together. Enjoy:

another (old) new video
05.18.06 // 08:57 AM
I almost forgot about this one. This is the video I made when I had to take down all the posters and decorations in my old room at the house in Holt. It was a sad day, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. Enjoy.

two new (old) zack-made videos!
05.17.06 // 09:26 AM
For those out there who have been following this little website for at least a couple years, you might remember these videos. When I transitioned to the current design, I was too lazy to incorporate some of the old video files that had been posted on iBZP in the past.
Well, I am finally getting my act together, and posting two of those videos. One is the Sweetest Day video I made for Stefy about a year and a half ago. It's basically photos and video from our first trip to Chicago back in 2004. The other video is from Morgan's sixth birthday party, which is also almost two years ago.
Head over to the video page to check out these new (old) videos.

my life so far
05.16.06 // 01:41 PM
For almost everyone who attended my graduation party this weekend, you've probably already seen this, but I wanted to post it anyway. Below is a compressed web version of the slideshow video I showed at the party. I'm also posting a link to it on the video page, and it'll stay there for future reference. If you would like a copy of the DVD, just post a request in the comments section, and we can figure out how to get you a disc. Enjoy!

They're singing Elvis tunes on American Idol tonight, but I thought it was appropriate take a moment and let the King sing first. He's a short clip of Elvis doing "Hound Dog" on Ed Sullivan:

Stef and I were watching Family Guy last night, and they did one of their usual pop-culture cutaways in the middle of the episode. This one had Stewie impersonating William Shatner's bizarre rendition of Rocket Man. I had totally forgotten about this video clip, so I thought I would share the delightfully bizarre performance with everyone. This is hysterical:

$60,000 worth of iPods + dominoes = a colossal waste of money a funny commercial (from MacSupport):
To celebrate the birth of Tom Cruise and Katie Holme's alien baby, Suri, I thought it would be appropriate to remember another Cruise clone, Tom Crooze.
For those who don't remember, this is the parody video that Ben Stiller appeared in for the MTV Movie Awards in 2000. He plays Tom's stunt double in Mission Impossible II, and is a little too excited about working with Mr. Cruise.
"This mission just got a whole lot more... impossibler!"

Updates have been rather sluggish since the end of last week for some reason, so I'm trying to make up for it today.
This is the music video for Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al", with Chevy Chase. I had never seen it before, but it's pretty funny/bizarre. Paul and Chevy prove once again that white men can't dance, but since the song is so good, it doesn't really matter. Enjoy:

04.11.06 // 08:44 PM
Even though Ben didn't play Rock This Bitch at Wharton last night, I still feel like this video deserves posting. Here he directs the West Australian Symphony Orchestra at a live concert in Perth, Australia. Just check it out. Ya gotta love Ben:

I always love discoveries like this on sites like YouTube or Google Video. This is the closing speech in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator, the first film to feature Chaplin actually speaking. This scene was pretty controversial at the time, but it's amazing how poignant it still is 66 years later. Enjoy:

burger king, and the most bizarre ads on tv
04.01.06 // 12:29 PM
I've always preferred McDonald's over Burger King, but their delightfully bizarre/creepy ads always have me cracking up. I'm not sure if they make me want to run out and get a Whopper, but they are pretty damn funny:

I haven't posted anything from YouTube in a while, so today seemed like a good day. The first one is Bruce Springsteen's famous video for "Dancing in the Dark" with Courtney Cox doing the dorky white girl dance with the Boss. The second video comes from U2's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. The band plays "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with Bruce. What a combo. Enjoy!

This is a clip of U2 closing out one of their shows in Argentina this year with an impromptu rendition of "Love is Blindness". The video quality here is piss pobre, but the audio is pretty good. Take a few seconds and check it out:

Here are a couple Coldplay video clips, in honor of last night's concert. The first one is the music video they did for "The Scientist", and the second one is a liver performance of "Fix You" from last season on SNL. Enjoy.

Well, it's kind of a slow Saturday, so here's another funny clip to pass the time. First is one of three different videos that U2 made for "One". It's very bizarre, but it's still one of my favorites of theirs. The second clip comes from the short-lived "Ben Stiller Show" from the 90s, with Ben doing his best Bono impression on his spoof of the video. It's called "Lucky Clovers"... enjoy!
